Skotel Alpine Resort is 100% owned and operated and New Zealand's highest hotel, located in the heart of the North Island within the Tongariro National Park.

It is conveniently located in Whakapapa Village at the foot of Mount Ruapehu, within 500 meters of Tongariro National Park Whakapapa Visitor Centre.
Hiking trails start directly at the hotel and the Sky Waka as well as the Mount Ruapehu ski field (Jun-Oct.) are a 6km drive up the mountain.
The hotel offers guests a variety of room types, from Backpacker rooms to View rooms of the Tongariro National Park and the volcanic mountain peaks of Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Ruapehu.

The hotel is the ideal base for exploring the UNESCO world heritage park and the many hiking and biking trails in the area. We also offer lunch packages so you won't get hungry on your adventures.

From the hotel you can walk to Taranaki Falls, Tama Lakes and Silika Rapids and for those up for a day trail walk, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Shuttles for the crossing can be booked upon arrival and leave from our doorstep.

After an exciting day hiking, biking, skiing (Jun-Oct) or sight-seeing guests can enjoy a refreshing sauna, a relaxing spa, or unwind over a drink or a meal at the Skotel Restaurant and Bar.

Skotel Alpine Resort is located in the Ruapehu Region on the Thermal Explorer & Volcanic Loop Touring Routes which traverse dramatic landscapes in the heart of the North Island of New Zealand, approximately half way between Auckland and Wellington. Tongariro National Park is about 4.5 hours drive from either city.

Flights to Ruapehu
There are now direct flights from Australia to Rotorua that bring you directly to the Volcanic Plateau and from there it is only a little over two hours to the Skotel. Cars can be hired at the airports.

Trains to Ruapehu
The Ruapehu region is serviced by the Northern Explorer Train service between Auckland and Wellington. The trains stops at about 1pm at the National Park Township which is about 12km from the Skotel. We can arrange a shuttle from the train to the hotel. There is a charge for this service.

Buses to Ruapehu
Intercity travels directly from Auckland via Taumarunui and stops at National Park Village at about 1pm from where a pick-up is required. There is also a service from Wellington to National Park. Details at

Cancellation Policy

Standard Cancellation Policy:
Summer 1 November to 30 June
Cancellations within forty-eight (48) hours = 100% of the total accommodation will be charged.
Winter 1 July to 31 October
Cancellations within seventy-two (72) hours = 100% of the total accommodation will be charged.
No-shows - 100% cancellation fee applies. For guests who have checked-in and require early departure - no refund applies.
